Denmark seems like a pretty random country to pick, doesn’t it. Well, its not so random for me since I know people here. My dad’s friend from high school, Blake, lives in Denmark. He has three daughters, Emma, Dagmar, and Martha. Emma actually came to live with my family in Houston 13 years ago. Now, she lives here in Denmark with her husband, Oscar, and their two daughters, Alma and Hanna.
This past March, my mom, my friend Isabelle, her sister Eliza, their mom, my cousin Paige, my aunt and I all went on a trip to Oslo, Copenhagen, and Stockholm. While we were in Copenhagen, Blake invited Isabelle, Eliza, and I to go to school with him for a day, since he is a teacher. At this point, we had all already decided that we wanted to live in Oslo and Copenhagen, as you do with any place you visit in Europe. When we went to the school it was so fun! The students took us on a walk to the town where they showed us a bunch of candy we hadn’t tried before and a type of danish strawberry pie cake thing.
Although I knew that this wasn’t what school had to be like everyday, I did know that I wanted to go to school here. Everything was so different than I was used to, so I thought that it would be such a great experience to live in Denmark.
Most people that go on exchange stay for a whole year, but that seemed like such a long time to be away from my family and friends, so I decided that I only wanted stay for one semester. Once we got back from the trip, I talked to my school about when would be best to go in order for it to work out with my classes and to be ready to graduate on time and I was told that the first semester of my Junior year would be the best option. That was so much sooner than I expected, I only had about four months to get ready!
So, four months later I hopped on a plane and now I’m here!
